Helping employees accurately recognise hazards within workplaces, evaluate risk and identify suitable control measures to put in place.
Industry - Adult social care
Location - UK
The client- Lifeways is the UK’s leading team of adult support services. They help lead more fulfilling, independent lives by providing extraordinary support for adults with learning disabilities, autism, physical disabilities, acquired brain injuries or mental health needs.
The product- Captivate Reality partnered up with Lifeways to design and develop a VR training application. The app delivers course material on workplace safety to staff.
The challenge- A more innovative & enjoyable method of training was requested to help improve recall and retention rates. We were also advised that the trainers delivering this programme would require a portable, easy-to-use solution. This was due to training being held at different site locations.
The experience- We identified that VR would be perfect for getting Lifeway's employees to train and reduce their current learning processes. We built an easy-to-use software solution paired with wireless VR headsets. Compact transport cases made the overall training programme easily deliverable at any site location. Gamification tactics were used to create a sense of reality, this helped employees learn in real time. By using these techniques, we developed a highly engaging learning experience that had test elements incorporated.
Scope of work- The app was built in an 8-week timeframe consisting of 2 week of creative & strategy, 4 weeks of app development and 2 week for testing, amending and app deployment.
In this phase we gathered all the useful information about Lifeway's current training programme. We confirmed a timeline and all the goals for the project.
We then went onto presenting our creative solutions to the client that included rendered visuals and prototyping.
Design and development lasted for 8 weeks with continuous integration and testing with the client.
The app was deployed onto 20 VR headsets. We continuously developed, improved and tested the app, based on client feedback.
The VR experience showcased a 3D staff room that had numerous hazards littered around the scene. Each of the hazards play out an animated sequence to show the trainees how the hazards looked- this equipped them to easily spot and correct hazards when identified in their own real-life environments. The scene included fall, burn, electrical and chemical hazards.
Sessions were to be carried out by tutors in groups of 5 on site using sourced Oculus VR headsets and lightweight transport cases. The trainees were to be quizzed after each completed session to ascertain retained knowledge.
The immersive nature of VR along with the feeling of presence was ideal for learners to engage their behavioural skills learning system. Users could learn the correct procedures through trial and error which promoted the formation of habits.
